2011 Lifeboat Services - ALB

ALB 4 - Friday 23rd December 2011 - RED FLARES SIGHTED OFF ABERYSTWYTH - New Quay ALB 'Frank & Lena Clifford of Stourbridge' launched at 21.16 to assist Aberystwyth lifeboat, in very rough weather, in a search to investigate a sighting of a red flare to the south west of Old Castle Point. On reaching the location, both lifeboats were stood down by MRCC Milford Haven who had reached the conclusion that the sighting was a false alarm with good intent. The lifeboat returned to station at New Quay at 22.30.

Weather - Poor, Wind SW 6-7, Sea state - very rough, Visibility - moderate

Thursday 10th August 2011 - OBJECT IN THE WATER OFF ABERPORTH - New Quay All Weather Lifeboat 'Frank & Lena Clifford of Stourbridge' launched on exercise at 18.00. Shortly after departing the crew were tasked to investigate an object floating in the water off Aberporth. Cardigan's Altlantic lifeboat 'Tanni Grey' was also launched to assist searching closer inshore. The object, originally thought to be an upturned boat, turned out to be a large oil drum and beached safely not to cause further hazards. New Quay lifeboat returned to station at 20.00 for recovery onto the beach and re-housing the following day.
 
Weather - Squally rain showers, Wind - SW 3-4, Sea state - slight, Visibility - good at times.

ALB 2 - Saturday 6th August 2011 - DISTRESS FLARE SIGHTED OFF ABERPORTH - New Quay All Weather Lifeboat 'Frank & Lena Clifford of Stourbridge' launched at 21.42 following a request from MRCC Milford Haven to investigate the sighting of a red distress flare off Aberporth. Cardigan's Altlantic lifeboat 'Tanni Grey' was also launched to assist closer inshore. Both lifeboats searched the area but nothing was found and the search was called off having assumed that the flare was in fact a Chinese Lantern. New Quay lifeboat returned to station at 23.10 for recovery onto the beach and re-housing the following day.

ALB 1 - Monday 24th January 2011 - FISHING VESSEL DISABLED - The Lifeboat Operations Manager received the first information from MRCC Milford Haven that the fishing vessel 'Gratitude' with 3 persons on board had been disabled by a fouled propeller and unable to make way 5 miles west of Aberporth. New Quay ALB 'Frank & Lena Clifford of Stourbridge' launched at 17.10 and after locating the vessel took her under tow to safety in New Quay harbour arriving at 20.55. New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' had already launched to assist the ALB with manoeuvring the vessel onto a secure mooring. The ALB was recovered onto the beach and back into the boathouse the next day.

2011 Lifeboat Services - ILB

ILB 23 - Wednesday 21st December 2011- FISHING VESSEL SINKING - New Quay relief ILB D-645 'The Martin Jolly' launched at 15.26 to the fishing vessel 'Catherine Arden' sinking on her mooring just north east of the main pier in New Quay. By the time the lifeboat reached her, the vessel had sunk with just part of the bow remaining visible above the surface. With no crew on board the stricken vessel, the lifeboat picked up floating debris taking it to shore and returning to mark the vessel with 2 large bouys, returning to station at 16.30.

ILB 22 - Sunday 23rd October 2011- PERSONS TRAPPED ON ROCKS - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 14.50 to to a number of adults and children trapped by the incoming tide on rocks close to the lifeboat station. All were landed safely on the nearby slipway and the lifeboat returned to station at 15.00

Weather - Good, Wind - SE 2, Sea state - smooth, Visibility - good.

ILB 21 - Tuesday 27th September 2011- PERSON FALLEN FROM CLIFFS - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 18.00 following a report of a man who had fallen from the cliffs at Ynys Lochtyn. Arriving on scene, the crew located the badly injured casualty and administered first aid on board the lifeboat. A Sea King helicopter, Rescue 169, had already been tasked to the incident from Chivenor and one of the helicopter Paramedics was lowered into the lifeboat. Due to the serious condition of the casualty, a decision was made to land the aircraft on the beach in Llangrannog where a safer and more stable transfer could be accomplished. The casualty was taken immediately to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest and the ILB returned to station arriving at 19.25.

ILB 20 - Monday 26th September 2011- FISHING VESSEL WITH A FOULED PROPELLER - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 13.50 to the fishing vessel 'Sanderling' with 2 persons on board just North of the main pier in New Quay. With a fouled propeller she was unable to make way and was towed the short distance onto her outer mooring. The lifeboat returned to station at 14.30.

Weather - Good, Wind - SE 2, Sea state - smooth, Visibility - good.

ILB 19 - Friday 19th August 2011- FISHING VESSEL WITH A FOULED PROPELLER - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea returned to station at 11.25 and at 11.35 was tasked to the fishing vessel 'Lady Janet' off Aberaeron, reporting a fouled propeller and making slow progress back to New Quay. On checking with the skipper it was decided that no assistance was required and the lifeboat returned to station at 12.00.

ILB 18 - Friday 19th August 2011- REPORT OF A CAPSIZED VESSEL -
New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 10.54 following a report made by farm workers looking over the cliffs at Coybal of a capsized vessel near the rocks. New Quay ALB 'Frank & Lena Clifford of Stourbridge' was also put on standby in case required. Arriving on scene, the ILB searched the immediate area and found nothing but local powerboat fishing close by. Following enquiries, the lifeboat crew decided that this was the vessel seen from the top of the cliffs - a case of mistaken identity but with good intent. The ILB returned to station at 11.25. The ALB was stood down the crew released.

ILB 17 - Thursday 10th August 2011- SAILING DINGHY IN DIFFICULTY -  New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' was self launched at 18.00 following a sighting from the boathouse of 2 persons on a small sailing dinghy in difficulty and waving for assistance, north east of the main pier. A local RIB that was close by went to their aid taking them under tow to safety. The ILB was stood down before entering the water and rehoused.

ILB 16 - Tuesday 2nd August 2011 - PERSON ON THE CLIFFS NEAR ABERPORTH - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 14.45 to assist the Police and Coastguards with a despondent person on the cliffs near Aberporth. Whilst on the slipway the lifeboat was stood down, the Police having successfully recovered the person.

Weather - Good, Wind - SW 2-3, Sea state - slight, Visibility - good.

ILB 15 - Thursday 28th July 2011- PERSONS IN THE WATER - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched on exercise at 19.30 and whilst recovering the lifeboat on the slipway at 20.30 the crew were alerted by members of the public to several swimmers who were thought to be in difficulty within the harbour.The ILB re-launched to investigate and finding that all was well, returned to station at 20.40.

ILB 14 - Thursday 30th June 2011 - SAILING DINGHY ON ROCKS - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 18.38 following a 999 call to Milford Haven Coastguard concerning a Laser sailing dinghy with 2 persons on board apparently in difficulty at Ynys Lochtyn. A local boat from Llangrannog went to their assistance picking up the 2 persons, with their dinghy in tow and taking them to safety. By the time the ILB arrived they were on the shore and receiving attention. After confirming that all was well the lifeboat returned to New Quay arriving back at station at 19.45.

ILB 13 - Sunday 26th June 2011 - CHILD INJURED FALLING FROM STEPS TO BEACH - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 14.08 following a request from Milford Haven Coastguard to assist a child who had fallen from steps accessing Traethgwyn beach from Quay West caravan park. On reaching the scene, the casualty was on the beach being attended by Paramedics from an ambulance so the ILB was not required. The lifeboat returned to station at 14.20.

ILB 12 - Saturday 25th June 2011 - SAILING DINGHY IN DIFFICULTIES - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 17.55 following a 999 call to Milford Haven Coastguard concerning a sailing dinghy with 2 persons on board apparently in difficulty off the Llanina reef buoy. A member of the lifeboat crew had seen them from his home waving arms and obviously trying to attract attention from the shore. The ILB crew found that the dinghy had a damaged rudder and was unable to steer. The dinghy was towed them back into the harbour and the lifeboat returned to station at 18.10.

ILB 11 - Saturday 25th June 2011 - PERSONS DRIFTING IN SMALL INFLATABLE DINGHY - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 15.38 following a 999 call to Milford Haven Coastguard concerning 2 persons apparently drifting off shore in a small, childs inflatable dinghy. The crew located the dinghy on Traethgwyn beach opposite the Quay West caravan park where the occupants, 2 adult females, were safe and well and in no danger. The lifeboat returned to station at 15.55.

ILB 10 - Tuesday 14th June 2011 - PERSON IN THE WATER FROM 2 MAN KAYAK - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 21.10 following reports to Milford Haven Coastguard of persons in difficulty on a 2 man sit-on-top kayak. The lifeboat found the kayak very quickly with one of the occupants having been in the water for some time and both extremely cold. The crew took them both onto the lifeboat administering first aid and landing them safely on the main pier in New Quay to be taken to hospital by ambulance. After recovering the Kayak and returning it to shore, the lifeboat returned to station at 21.45.

ILB 9 - Tuesday 14th June 2011 - DESPONDENT MALE ON THE ROCKS - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 18.10 following reports of a despondent male threatening to jump into the sea from rocks south of Aberaeron. The ILB searched along the coast and spotted the person on rocks in a small cove towards the south end of Aberaeron beach. On seeing the lifeboat he jumped into the water with the crew needing to reach him in difficult access and pull him into the boat to safety. The man was given first aid by the lifeboat crew and delivered to Aberaeron harbour where an ambulance took him to hospital. The ILB returned to station at 19.25.

ILB 8 - Thursday 2nd June 2011 - PERSONS CUT OFF BY THE TIDE - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 10.30 to assist 6 persons, including a small child, stranded by the tide on the rocks near the lifeboat station. Everyone was taken off and landed safely at the lifeboat slipway. The lifeboat returned to station at 10.50.

Weather - good/sunny, Wind SW 1-2, Sea state - calm, Visibility - good.

ILB 7 - Monday 30th May 2011 - SMALL FISHING VESSEL ADRIFT - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 19.35 following a Mayday call from the vessel 'Nonny' with 2 persons on board suffering engine failure and in danger of drifting onto rocks outside Aberaeron harbour. Just before the lifeboat had reached the casualty, she was able to restart her engine and get safely into the harbour under her own power. The lifeboat returned to station at 20.25.

ILB 6 - Saturday 30th April 2011 - FLARE SIGHTING - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 22.25 following a report from a 999 call to MRCC Milford Haven of a green flare sighted off Traethgwyn beach. The ILB carried out a search of the area from the lifeboat station to Cei Bach but nothing was found. The very unusual possibility of a 'Green Flare' was taken to be a case of mistaken identification but with good intent. The lifeboat returned to station at 23.20.

ILB 5 - Good Friday 22nd April 2011 - VESSEL OUT OF FUEL - New ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 14.59 to assist the 18 foot Shetland type cabin cruiser 'Ahsoka Tano' with 6 persons on board. The vessel had launched earlier in the day from New Quay Pier but had run out of fuel 2 miles off Target Rock and was unable to return. The lifeboat quickly found the vessel and took her under tow back and onto a safe mooring in New Quay harbour returning to station at 16.00.

ILB 4 - Friday 15th April 2011 - PERSONS TRAPPED ON ROCKS - New Quay ILB D-616 'Amy Lea' now back on station, launched at 18.40 to assist 3 people trapped on the rocks south of the lifeboat station by the incoming tide. After safely landing them at the station slipway, the lifeboat returned to station at 18.40.

ILB 3 - Tuesday 12th April 2011 - ASSIST IN SEARCH FOR MISSING PERSON - Following consultation with the Lifeboat Operations Manager, MRCC Milford Haven and Dyfed Powys Police requested RNLI assistance to search for a man who had been missing in the area for 10 day. The relief ILB D-690 'David Young' was launched at 15.30 and carried out a close shoreline search from Cei Bach to Gilfach yr Halen and back but nothing was found. The lifeboat returned to station at 16.00.

ILB 2 - Saturday 26th March 2011 - PERSONS TRAPPED ON ROCKS - New Quay relief ILB D-690 'David Young' was launched at 11.38 to assist persons trapped by the incoming tide on the rocks south of the lifeboat station. In total 11 people, comprising 7 adults and 4 children, including 1 in a baby buggy, were taken off and landed safely ashore. We were pleased to note that the child in the baby buggy was not disturbed having been loaded on and off the lifeboat without being wakened! The lifeboat returned to station at 12.15.

ILB 1 - Monday 24th January 2011 - FISHING VESSEL DISABLED - New Quay ILB 'Amy Lea' launched at 20.55 to assist the ALB 'Frank & Lena Clifford of Stourbridge' to manoeuvre the disabled fishing vessel 'Gratitude' onto a safe mooring in New Quay harbour. The ILB returned to station at 22.00 with the vessel secured at the main pier.
