Milford Haven Coastguard had been monitoring the progress of
the vessel following a call from the crew to say that they
were having intermittent engine problems and due to sea
conditions, were unable to get on deck to set sails. The ALB
plotted the position of the vessel at some 27.8 nautical
miles west of New Quay Head putting it in the St. Georges
Channel. Reaching the vessel at around 12 midnight, 2 of the
ALB crew went on board and a tow rigged to make back to New

and had been in the water for some time struggling to get
back on board, very tired and unable to paddle. All were

Dog on Cliffs - New Quay ALB 'Frank & Lena Clifford of
Stourbridge' was launched at 15.18 to assist with the search
for possible missing persons south of Llangrannog. The
diving vessel 'Islander' had reported seeing a dog barking
near the bottom of the cliffs but there were no signs of any
owners. New Quay Coastguards were tasked by Milford Haven
Coastguard to search the area fearing that persons might be
in the water or had climbed down the cliffs to find the dog.
Arriving on scene, the ALB requested the launch of New Quay
ILB 'Amy Lea' to get closer to the cliffs and recover the
dog. With coastguards having located the owners on the
beach, the ILB was able to take one of them close to the
cliff where the dog was successfully taken on board and both
landed safely back at Llangrannog. The ALB returned to New
Quay and assisted the motor vessel 'Shiya' in the harbour
before being recovered onto the beach at 17.15.
A small piece of history can be recorded from this service
with the station's last 2 maroons being used to call the
lifeboat crew. For very good reasons concerned with safety,
the RNLI have stopped the practice of firing maroons and
this will have been the final time they could be heard over
New Quay.

Saturday 8th August 2009 - 2 Persons

cold and concerned for their own safety. They had no other
method of communication, no safety equipment and the battery
on their mobile phone was running low. They had also
reported that they could see a flashing white light and a
series of red lights in the distance. Assuming the dinghy
was in an area somewhere between New Quay and Aberaeron, the
lifeboat deployed 2 white parachute flares at short
intervals in the expectation that they would be seen by the
casualty but this proved not to be the case. New Quay ILB
'Amy Lea' was launched to assist at 05.10 and lifeboats from
Aberystwyth and Cardigan were also tasked to the north and
south of the possible search areas. They were joined by a
local fishing vessel, 'Catherine Arden' and a Sea King
Helicopter from RAF Valley. Milford Haven Coastguard
continued trying to question and obtain more information
from the person on the mobile phone and with their
suspicions being aroused, the the police were asked to
investigate. This resulted in 2 persons being arrested in
New Quay and taken into custody. This was a malicious hoax
call made by persons on land, resulting in a search that had
lasted for over 2 hours. All search units were stood down
and the lifeboats returned to their various station with the
ALB returning to New Quay at 07.17.

also launched and quickly reached the scene to start
