Film - The
Constant Husband with Rex Harrison - 1954 / 55
The
film begins with Rex Harrison - who was actually staying at the Dolau
Inn at the time, who wakes up with a total loss of memory in a strange room.
He looks at himself in the wardrobe mirror with a puzzled expression,
and then looks out of the window. He is looking from
the window at the pier in New Quay.
When
he leaves his room, he emerges from the Blue Bell pub - then painted
pink. Continuity was not very good in 1955 as it can clearly be seen
that there are no iron railings and no potted palms on the front of the
pub and it was also high tide. The road must have been closed for the filming as there is no
traffic and there are tables and chairs in the road! Rex Harrison then
walks across the road to the pier.
He
walks among the
fishermen who are speaking in a strange language. He tries to speak to
them in
both French and German and then asks if anyone speaks English. He is
informed by the surprised fishermen in English that he is at Cei Newydd
- New Quay in Wales. You will see that in this shot the tide has now
gone out. With another abrupt scene change, he takes a few paces and
is instantly in the middle of what is now the car park beside Pwll Cam
in Aberaeron - complete with a few cows and horses and only a single
vintage car in sight.
He
sees a local man sitting on a bench, sits down
and engages the man in conversation. The man is quite bemused by this
strange Englishman and quickly walks off with the Town Hall in the
background. Props include cattle, a herd of sheep, a cart with
milk churns and an old T20 Gray-Fergie tractor.

We have now watched the entire film.
Rex Harrison finds that he is a serial bigamist, who left a rented
car in a ditch near Llangollen - almost 100 miles from New Quay!
Neither New Quay or Aberaeron appear again in the film, and we never
find out why he was in New Quay.
